Functional food

The food industry adds extracts which are rich in bioactive molecules to the natural food in order to this food become functional foods, ie with properties beneficial for health, in addition to its nutritional value.

Lluís Arola is the coordinator of the research group in Nutrigenomics of the Universitat Rovira Virgili (URV). A part of this group, lead by Gerard Pujadas and Santi Garcia-Vallvé, uses Chemoinformatics tools and techniques to predict natural molecules that could be used as additives in functional foods in the future.

These foods can act in a manner similar to drugs used in treating cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, among others illness.

To carry out this research, this group uses, among other tools, the ones provided by the Drug Design Service.
