GÉANT GN5-2

Technical specifications sheet

Financing: Co-financed by the European Union and Europe's academic and research networks. As part of the GN5 FPA partnership framework agreement, the project receives funding from the Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 101194278. GN5-2 is the continuation of GN5-1, the second phase of the GN5 project by GÉANT.

Financed amount: €80,000,000 (EU contribution) out of €115,314,953.75 (total project cost).

Coordinated by: GÉANT.

Execution period: 01-01-2025 to 30-06-2027.

Objective: To provide faster, more resilient, and secure connectivity infrastructure and collaboration services. It also aims to address priorities such as data security and innovation in quantum technologies and optical time and frecuency networks.

Training programme: Network Automation eAcademy

The GN5-2 project is structured around nine work packages, with CSUC participating as Task Leader in the sixth package dedicated to network development, focusing on the evaluation and development of technology in the areas of network infrastructure, services, and monitoring, and providing support services to the production network in GÉANT projects.

CSUC's participation in the GN5-2 project is through Red.es, a Spanish public enterprise that manages RedIRIS, Spain's academic and research network. Through Red.es and RedIRIS, CSUC continues its training and evangelization efforts in network automation, orchestration, and virtualization technologies initiated with the GN4-3 project, as well as in quantum technologies and optical time and frecuency networks in GN5-1, leading the Network eAcademy.

The Network eAcademy is a free-to-access digital academy aimed at network engineering and operator personnel, offering informative capsules on various topics such as formats, protocols, languages or case examples in the academic world. To facilitate learning for users based on their experience and knowledge, the Network eAcademy presents different pathways to adapt to everyone's needs, with real-world examples and resources from the research and education sectors to contextualize and foster innovation.

During the GN5-2 project, CSUC also participates in the creation of discussion groups to maximize the value of national research and education networks (NREN).
