GÉANT GN5-1

Technical specifications sheet

Financing: Co-financed by the European Union and Europe's academic and research networks. As part of the GN5 FPA partnership framework agreement, the project receives funding from the Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 101100680. GN5-1 is one of the first in a series of projects foreseen under GN5-FPA, the 7-year strategic framework that outlines the overall direction, objectives, and impacts of individual projects within that time-frame as part of Horizon Europe.

Financed amount: 55,000,000 € (EU contribution) of the 82,640,006.25 € (total cost of the project).

Coordinated by: GÉANT.

Execution period: 1/01/2023 to 31/12/2024.

Main goal: Provide faster, more resilient, and more secure connectivity infrastructure and collaboration services. The goal is to enable the academic and research community access to applications that support effective, evidence-based collaboration between virtual research teams around the world.

Training programme: Network Automation eAcademy

The GN5-1 project is structured around nine work packages, of which CSUC participates as Task Leader in the sixth package dedicated to network development, focused on the evaluation and development of technology in the areas of network infrastructure, services and monitoring, and in the provision of support services to the production network in GÉANT projects.

CSUC participates in GN5-1 via Red.es, a Spanish public business entity that manages RedIRIS, Spain's academic and research network. Through Red.es and RedIRIS, CSUC continues the training work that it started with the previous GN4-3 project at the head of the Network Automation eAcademy.

The eAcademy is a free-to-access digital academy aimed at engineering and network operator staff, and offers informative capsules on various topics, such as formats, protocols, languages or use case examples in the academic world. To facilitate learning for users depending on their experience and knowledge, the eAcademy presents different itineraries with real examples and resources from the world of research and education to contextualize and spark innovation.

During the GN5-1 project, CSUC also participates in the creation of discussion groups to maximize the value of national research and education networks (NREN), and the creation of incubator projects to recognize the value of these networks.
