CSUC

Quantum Spain

Technical specifications sheet

Financing: NextGenerationEU/PRTR. Subsidy for the Quantum ENIA project within the framework of the Spain Digital 2026 Agenda and the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

Financed amount: 200,000 €.

Organisation: Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence from Ministry for Digital Transformation and of Civil Service.

Execution period: 2022-2025.

Main goal: Create a national quantum computing ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The first quantum computer in southern Europe

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), as the main node of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES), manages the construction and installation of the first quantum computer based on European technology. The project involves 25 universities and infrastructure and supercomputing centres throughout the State, including CSUC, which provides 20% of its computing capacity to the RES.

Quantum Spain is part of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (ENIA) and aims to build a solid quantum computing ecosystem in Spain, taking advantage of and promoting the talent of local researchers who are experts in this technology. This goal is based on four pillars:

  • The quantum computer.
  • The development of useful quantum algorithms that are applicable to real-life problems.
  • The creation of a remote access system in the cloud to allow industry and the public sector to experiment with new quantum algorithms.
  • A training program to increase the capabilities of potential users of quantum computing, and so that all nodes of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) nodes are capable of serving future users of these technologies.

Quantum computing training

CSUC will hire and train a technician specialized in quantum computing within the framework of Quantum Spain. The goal is that companies and institutions interested in accessing the quantum computer or one of its classic simulators can benefit from specialized technicians with sufficient training, so they can assist them in adapting their algorithm to experimental specifications or help them to contact specialized technical groups specialized in algorithm.
