NRENUM

NRENUM is a protocol aimed to facilitate the convergence between telephone networks and data from academic networks. The goal of the service is to ensure that calls between the participants of the collaborating institutions are made through the academic networks.

NRENUM uses the ENUM standard protocol, developed by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), which simplifies the operating system for VoIP calls. The protocol is based on the Domain Name Resolution System (DNS) and, by means of NAPTR (Naming Pointer Resource Records), the correspondence between the telephone number and the SIP URI is defined. A SIP URI is a SIP routing scheme, a unique identifier, whose syntax is very similar to the one of an email address.

The ENUM scheme allows VoIP calls to connect directly through the data network, which replaces the traditional network. From here, ENUM translates a phone number into a SIP URI, which allows users to continue using existing phone number formats even if the call is routed over the data network thanks to DNS servers. This makes ENUM a fast, stable and economical link between voice and data network.

In order to use this service it is necessary that both the source and the destination have configured the use of NRENUM to make this type of call.
